Mathstime-How Does it Work?
Individual lessons are offered to determine the level of work a child has reached in Maths. From this it is possible to form an inidividual work programme. Before sessions begin a meeting will be arranged with the parent or carer of the child to find out what level the child is at in school and discuss areas that we will focus on with the child and this will also give the parent/carer and student the opportunity to ask any questions he or she may have. Throughout the sessions Perminder will constantly be assessing to see where the child is at in terms of levels and what the child needs to develop even further. Children love stickers, and this is a reward system Perminder uses to build up the child’s confidence.
Your child also will take national tests and assessments at the end of each key stage to show if they are working at, above or below the target level for their age. Your child will be supported to prepare for these, to really achieve their potential. Past test papers and assessments will be given where necessary.
Perminder will spend 10-15 minutes after each session to discuss how the lesson progressed and this time will also be used to talk through homework. If parents/carers prefer, feedback can be given via e-mail each week. Mathstime believes it is vital that parents are involved in their child’s learning and tuition, as it is proven that children actively supported by their parents move forward more quickly.
Parent Sessions
Many parents feel they would like to learn more about the Mathematical methods currently taught in schools, so Mathstime offers sessions to help parents understand these methods. Since Perminder introduced them, the sessions have proved to be very popular. These sessions are mainly targeted for those parents who do not have individual tutoring on a weekly basis and have a general interest in how Maths is taught in schools. Parents may want to have a better understanding of what the levels consist of, what level of achviement they can expect from their child, or what he/she needs to move onto the next stage. The aim of these sessions are also for parents to feel confident to support their child/children with their maths homework. These are also aimed towards parents whose children are on the waiting list for weekly sessions. The sessions aim to support parents to support their child at home.
Holiday Sessions
Mathstime offers holiday (school half-term) sessions to everyone. These could be for students and parents who wish to continue their sessions through the holidays for continuity and consistency. They are also offered to students who are on the waiting list for weekly sessions. Some students may feel they just need a ‘top up’ in some areas, in which case holiday sessions are offered. Believe it or not, Mathstime also has students who have holiday sessions simply because they enjoy Maths and want to be given some challenging Maths questions to help excel even further!!
